In this article, you’ll find:
Overview: What Are Company and Contact Locations?
UpLead allows you to target leads based on two distinct criteria:
Company Location: The geographic location of a company’s headquarters (HQ).
Example: A company headquartered in Boston will appear under "Company Location: Boston," regardless of its branch offices.Contact Location: Where an individual physically works, which could be at a satellite office, remote location, or HQ.
Example: A contact working in New York for a Boston-based company will have "Contact Location: New York."
💡 Key Insight: Many companies operate in multiple locations, but UpLead’s company data reflects HQ only unless manually enriched.
How Do Location Filters Work?
UpLead offers several ways to combine Company Location and Contact Location in your searches. These filters can be accessed via the Location dropdown menu in the Prospector tool.
Filter Options Explained
Contact AND Company Location
Finds contacts who both work in a specific location and are employed by companies headquartered in that same location.
Example: A contact physically working in Boston for a company headquartered in Boston.
Best Use: Targeting local decision-makers at regional businesses. When using Contact AND Company Location filters, it’s often best to select the Metro Area. While a contact may not live directly in a specific city, they could reside in the surrounding area, allowing you to capture a broader, more accurate audience.
Contact OR Company Location (Default Setting)
Includes contacts either working in or employed by companies headquartered in the selected location.
Example: Contacts working in Boston or employed by Boston-based HQs, even if they work remotely elsewhere.
Best Use: Maximizing lead volume while maintaining regional relevance.
Contact Location Only
Filters results based solely on where the contact is physically located, without considering the company’s headquarters location.
Example: Contacts working in New York for a company based in Boston.
Best Use: Targeting employees in specific cities, regardless of their company’s location.
Company Location Only
Targets all companies headquartered in the selected location, regardless of where employees are based.
Example: All companies headquartered in Boston, even if their employees are located elsewhere.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Assuming this includes branch offices—UpLead's company data reflects HQ only.
Real-World Example: Boston Tech Sales
Let’s say you want to find CTOs working in Boston for Massachusetts-headquartered companies:
Filter Setup:
Location Target: Contact AND Company Location
Location: Boston, MA
Outcome:
✅ Included: CTOs physically located in Boston at MA-headquartered companies.
❌ Excluded:
CTOs in Boston working for California-based HQs.
CTOs outside Boston working for MA-based HQs.
💡 Pro Tip: Use "Contact OR Company" if you want to include remote employees working for target HQs.
Adjusting Your Location Settings
Follow these steps to refine your search using UpLead’s location filters:
Step 1: Access the Filters
Navigate to UpLead’s Prospector tool.
Click on + Add Filter → Location.
Open the dropdown menu to select one of four options:
Contact: Filter results based solely on the contact's physical location.
Company: Filter results based solely on the company's headquarters location.
Contact OR Company: (Default) Target leads that match either the contact's location OR the company headquarters location. This expands your search.
Contact AND Company: Target leads that simultaneously match both the contact's location AND the company headquarters location. This narrows your search to contacts working in the same location as the HQ.
Step 2: Refine Geographic Scope
Choose your desired geographic level:
Country
Region/State
County/Metro Area
City
For ZIP codes:
Upload a custom list via "My Lists" (company location only).
Use metro areas as an alternative for contact locations.
Step 3: Save & Iterate
Save high-performing filters as templates for future searches.
Layer additional criteria like industry or employee size to further refine your results.
Test combinations like "AND" vs. "OR" logic to determine what works best for your target market.
FAQs:
Q: Why can’t I find satellite offices using "Company Location"?
A: UpLead’s company data reflects HQ addresses only. To target branch offices, use "Contact Location."
Q: Can I search for separate Company or Company location? For example, can I search for companies headquartered in Massachusetts, but contacts located in California?
A: Yes, you can. However, you'll need to choose either Contact Location or Company Location exclusively. Then, use the other location filter (the one you didn’t select) under the Search Criteria to refine your results.
Q: Can I exclude locations?
A: Yes, you can exclude locations by using filters for Company City, Company State, Company Zip Code, Contact City, Contact State, and Contact Zip Code.
Q: Can I filter by radius?
A: No, the platform does not support radius filtering. However, there are third-party tools available that allow you to select a city or zip code and return a list in CSV format. This list can then be uploaded back into the platform.
